My mentor/friend Ross advised me to insert braces to hold the pony's back with a fiberglass patching kit.

I put in four strips of wood that the back will rest on, and attached them using this fiberglass fabric, held in place with an extremely nasty gook. It worked really well, but the process was smelly and sticky and gross: avoid at all costs.
