As part of Nashville's 12South Redevelopment Project, the Metro Nashville
Arts Commission sponsored two art classes at David Lipscomb and Belmont
Universities spent the semester exploring the field of public art. The
final project in both classes was to design banners, trash receptacles
and benches for the area. The construction project is managed by Metropolitan
Development and Housing Agency, and includes new sidewalks, moving power
lines, and new street furniture and banners designed by students at Lipscomb
and Belmont Universities. The public art classes, co-taught by Terry Thacker,
Lanie Gannon, and myself led students on an exploration of practical,
aesthetic, conceptual, and political issues encountered in creating public
artworks. As a final project, students created designs for benches, banners,
and other ideas for the site. Winners of a competition were commissioned
to create their designs, which now enliven the street. |
